‘Swampy’ for President?

His famous remarks as he left his post as prime minister in 2001 were: “I am resigning to prevent the country from falling into a political swamp”. Observers would say that Portugal has been in a political swamp ever since – but now opposition leaders, including former President Mário Soares, are calling for António Guterres to return to the fold as a candidate for President of the Republic (elections due in 2016). As one commentator remarked in Público this morning, “this can only be a joke”.
