Sustainable homes are the future: Experts call for change in attitude

Energy || As energy price hikes continue unabated the answer remains in the power of the sun, says the team from Sustainable Homes Algarve.
“Has oil supply peaked?” – one of the key questions posed at the ‘Sustainable Homes Algarve Conference’ at the Hilton Vilamoura last week was hotly debated in the form of escalating energy price increases of as much as 40%.
In her welcoming address, chairperson Anabela Polida Macieira, architect and ‘Passivehaus’ specialist, advised that it is possible to build or refurbish a home in the Algarve in a way that it is completely free of energy costs.
Anabela spoke of the need for more skills in energy efficiency, especially amongst builders and refurbishment specialists in the Algarve.
Speaking of energy losses of up to 10 times more from traditional Portuguese buildings, Consulting Energy Engineer Fredrik von der Lancken said: “We have to change our way of thinking and acting, as it is no longer business as usual.”
David Rowlands, vice chair for Sustainable Homes Algarve, spoke of the depth of skill and knowledge amongst members across a broad spectrum, including construction, refurbishment, landscaping, water management and wellbeing, often overlooked but a vital area in sustainable homes.
Responding to the question of peak oil, David spoke of the balance between consumption, production and alternative energy sources.
Energy is a global issue, he said, and it directly affects every one of us. “Sustainable Homes Algarve has the experience to interpret legislation, best practice and EU financial resources to help owners and landlords understand and better manage the issues.”
David confirmed the organisation will be at the BLIP Expo 2014 on October 4 and 5. He said: “Come to BLIP and meet the experts in building, interiors and landscapes. Whether you want to build a new home or renovate your existing property, we are an unbiased resource for you to draw on.”
The next conference by Sustainable Homes Algarve will be on August 28 at Alma Verde, the eco-homes development near Budens, which has consistently won international awards since 2002.
