VICE-PRESIDENT of Lisbon Câmara, Fontão de Carvalho, was forced to stand down for three months on Saturday after his PSD party withdrew their political support and confidence for him.
Allegations have been made against Carvalho, saying that he allowed 180,000 euros to be illegally paid out in bonuses to administrators of Empresa Publica de Urbanização de Lisboa (EPUL), a câmara run company.
Carvalho said: “I will suspend my mandate for three months. This is purely a personal decision.”
Despite the fact that opposition councillors have called for the resignation of the Mayor, Carmona Rodrigues and fresh elections, Rodrigues remained defiant over the weekend that he would retain his position at the head of the câmara.
