The first bone-anchored hearing aid (Baha) implant was performed at Hospital do Barlavento in Portimão.
A five-year-old girl, who has been treated at the hospital’s ear, nose and throat unit since she was born, underwent the surgery to implant the Baha, which will help with her hearing impairment. She was born without an ear canal and therefore could not hear.
The multidisciplinary team at the hospital comprised the ear, nose and throat unit director Dr Ilídio Gonçalves and nine other health professionals.
