Portugal’s Supreme Court has ordered the State to pay €15,000 to a father held 325 days in jail for allegedly having raped his daughter. The man repeatedly denied the charge, borne out in court by a second daughter. The judges wanted to hear the daughter’s testimony, but even the recording she gave prosecutors was so quiet no one could make out a word. The child also refused to testify in court, thus her father was absolved. He initially wanted to sue the State for €212,000 in damages, but the Supreme Court has fixed the sum now at €15,000.
