Supporting people with disabilities

Hand-painted tiles created by disabled people in Portugal are decorating a mural at the Quinta da Balaia roundabout, in Albufeira, to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which was celebrated on December 3.

The special ceremony was attended by students of APEXA, a local association that supports those with special needs in the Algarve, Albufeira Mayor José Carlos Rolo and Nuno Guedes, president of the association.

Guedes said: “We launched this challenge (of creating artistic tiles) in 2010 and aim to continue the initiative in the future as it gets other special needs’ institutions in the country involved.

“Art, which combines several forms of expression, is ever more considered a way of socially integrating people with disabilities.”
