Supermarket protest

Employees from the Alisuper supermarket chain called off a strike due to be held today (Friday) because of delayed payment of wages.

According to the workers’ union, Alisuper staff were taking the planned action because their holiday subsidies from 2008 and 2009 had not yet been paid and also the non-payment of compensation from late salaries in 2007.

Fernando Joaquim, director of Alisuper, told Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã that last year’s holiday subsidies “will be paid in September” while the rest will be paid “as soon as possible”.
