A new artist to Galeria Côrte-Real in Paderne, Marie Mills is an early riser, painting the natural world as sunlight begins to flood the morning sky. Her images perfectly replicate the subtle colours of dawn, wild flowers and grasses.
Marie can usually be found on cliff tops and in fields close to the sea. She begins by building up the layers and colours of undergrowth using washes of oil paint, then adding plants and grasses in heavy oils applied with palette knife and fingers.
This is the first occasion her paintings have been seen in Portugal where Côrte-Real is her sole representative. Throughout the summer, at weekends, complimentary fine wines and savouries are served to visitors on the gallery’s pretty garden terrace.
