Summer heats up in the Algarve

Portugal Confidential

Designer sunglasses. Check. Top down on the cabriolet. Check. Sunscreen. Check. Fresh ideas for cool summer fun. Read on…

Popular celebrity chef Chakall is making noise in the central Algarve. No doubt you’ve caught this Argentine, who wears a turban instead of a chef’s hat, on TV or read his award-winning cookbook.

Perhaps you’ve eaten at one of his fabulous restaurants (Grappa in Porto, Splendid in Geres and Quinta dos Frades in Lisbon).

Now, Chakall is turning his attention to the Algarve’s Praia do Ancão with the newly opened Praya by Chakall (pictured top left).

Praya is, in Chakall’s words, a “trendy beach restaurant”. It is simple and relaxed, decorated in a casual beach style.

The idea is to let the sky and ocean be the focal points. Chakall’s “divine cuisine” utilises flavours and textures discovered in his travels.

So, expect to be surprised and enchanted when ordering Praya’s Argentine beef, grilled fish and tapas.

Everything Chakall does is with a healthy dose of fun. Therefore, evening activities and special events are planned throughout the summer.

Put Praya on your “must-do” list.  In the central Algarve, head toward Quinta do Lago and follow signs to Praia do Ancão. The restaurant is on the beach.

Over in the western Algarve, in Portimão, there’s an exhibition in progress of cool graffiti-inspired art (pictured below left). Vandalismo is a collection of works by painter Bamby (also known as Hélder José).

With a background in advertising and design, Bamby is one of the few artists who have been successful with this marginalised art form.

His “training” came from illegally painting in the streets with friends. Now he is commissioned by public and private sectors to decorate buildings and create works of art to hang in homes.

The exhibition runs through June in the Espaço EMARP, at Rua José António Marques in Portimão.

After contemplating all that creativity, we generally like to find a place to grab a beverage and chill-out. An excellent place in Portimão is at the Aqua Lounge.

This space has ample terrace seating for al fresco cocktails and tapas with a spectacular view of the Portimão Marina. Happy hour is from 6pm-8pm.

Inside, there’s a contemporary-design dining room for dinner too. But as the sun sets, Aqua Lounge transforms into a hot nightclub for trendsters in the area.

Aqua Lounge is at the Tivoli Portimão Hotel in the Portimão Marina.
