A 37 year-old German man died suddenly as he was sailing along the coast of Culatra, near Faro, on Sunday.
According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the man, who was accompanied by other sailors, felt unwell before falling unconscious on the boat.
Olhão’s maritime police responded to the emergency call from the crew and sent the emergency services who tried to revive the man, but without success.
The maritime police handed the case over to the public ministry who were due to perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The man has not been named.
No-one was available for comment at the German consulate, the maritime police or the local câmara at the time the Algarve Resident went to press on Wednesday.
