Successful food bank campaign

Volunteers from the Algarve food bank collected almost 190 tonnes of supplies in the region on November 27 and 28.

The president of Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome do Algarve, Adriano Pimpão, told the Algarve Resident: “The campaign results are an important contribution for people in need, and all thanks to a large movement of solidarity by the Portuguese society and the professionalism and dedication of thousands

of volunteers.”

The total collected is 41 tonnes more that the campaign in November last year.

Adriano Pimpão added: “In the Algarve, the number of volunteers involved in the campaign exceeded our expectations. We have also registered a significant increase in the number of volunteers organised by companies in the region, as well as improvements in support for the food transportation.”

The food supplies will now be distributed to more than 15,000 people through the institutions that work in partnership with the food bank.

Meanwhile, other food banks in Portugal collected more than 3,250 tonnes of food, a record, in more than 1,400 retail outlets in the country. The amount collected represents 30 per cent more than last year.
