Another activist from the Greve Climática Estudantil (Student Climate Strike) has been arrested, this time for taking part in a demonstration outside Oeiras’ Public Prosecutor’s Office in solidarity with the activists arrested yesterday for blocking the entrance to the Council of Ministers meeting. The young woman was arrested for ‘trying to block the street’, says Lusa. Particular reference was made by activists interviewed by the news agency to authorities’ attempts to limit the media exposure of these protests. This movement appears to model itself very much on the ‘Extinction Rebellion’ activists that have caused a number of incidents in UK. According to members, the young people involved “will not stop protesting (…) the aim is not to give the government peace”. Further protests are planned from November 13 “until our government commits to this being the last gas winter in Portugal in which we use fossil gas to produce electricity”.
