Strong winds delay visit by Portuguese president to Madeira and Azores

Appalling weather – particularly the strong wind –  has seen President Marcelo’s visit to Madeira and Azores today delayed. It’s unclear when he will be visiting the regional archipelagos.

The trip today was timed to coincide with the start of the president’s second mandate (falling on March 9). Marcelo has to nominate a ‘representative of the Republic’ in each of the autonomous regions whose mandate will coincide with his own.
