Statue illuminated for Christmas

ONE OF Portugal’s  most famous monuments, Cristo Rei, the statue of Christ, will be lit up for Christmas for the first time in its history.

The monument, which was inaugurated in 1959 in Almada near Lisbon, will be illuminated over the festive period by two large blue stars that will reach 80 metres in height.

This will be achieved with 85,200 LED lamps and will last until January 6. The best places to observe the statue are on the Ponte 25 de Abril and Vasco da Gama bridges as well as from Lisbon.
