State, business and private debt leapt €16.9 billion in 2021, meaning the total for ‘non-financial sector debt’ now comes in at €768.1 billion. The news was delivered today by the Bank of Portugal, which broke it down to explain that the debt of private people and businesses came in at €14.2 billion, while public administration was responsible for the remainder €2.7 billion. With regard to GDP, this mean that non-financial debt actually fell last year compared to the previous year, from 375.4% of national GDP to 363.3%
