New star on the Algarve Jackie Ashworth had her showcase performance last month at Dunas Douradas Beach Club.
The Algarve Resident was there for an exclusive first interview with the new singer and musician everyone’s talking about.
Dunas Douradas Beach Club had their busiest Thursday for a while, with more than 100 guests going along to watch Jackie perform.
Playing a variety of songs and styles, including jazz, funk, soul, rock and roll, pop and classic chart hits, Jackie had the audience on their feet, singing and dancing along.
“I love it when the crowd interacts with my performance,” she said. “Music is better when the audience joins in, it makes it more fun to play.”
Jackie Ashworth has been involved with music since she was young.
“I was wrapped up in music at high school,” she said. “I played many different instruments, including the trombone and piano, but the flute was my main instrument and I sat my A Level in music at only 16. After school, I taught myself how to play the saxophone.”
Today she continues to play the flute, saxophone and clarinet in her performances.
Jackie has performed gigs around Europe, at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall.
She was a member of the girl band 90% Angels but her real passion is writing her own music, and three years ago Jackie released her own solo album, Voluptuality.
“Moving to the Algarve gives me more time to concentrate on writing music and get back into the studio,” she said.
“It’s what I really love doing. I performed one of my own songs tonight and it’s great how positively the audience reacted.”
One member of the audience at the show was Gaynor Morgan, close friend and fellow band mate in 90% Angels.
“Jackie was the one in the band who wanted to write the music and produce more original songs. She was like the mother of the group – she kept us all in check!” Gaynor Morgan said.
“She really brings something unique to the Algarve as a female saxophonist and there’s a big buzz surrounding her.”
Jackie Ashworth is hoping to continue her musical career in the Algarve with more up and coming gigs.
