Star gazing

As part of celebrations to mark the International Year of Astronomy, the Portuguese Astronomy Society is asking for everyone in Portugal to turn off their lights on July 18 for a minimum of one hour to allow the people of Portugal to have a clear view of the night sky.

Light pollution caused by artificial lighting restricts the view of the sky at night and organisers hope that the special project will reveal stars that are usually obscured by the pollution.
