St. Vincent’s welcomes new Reverend

Reverend Robert Bates has been appointed the new chaplain for the St Vincent’s chaplaincy.

Originally from Northamptonshire, Rev. Bates will be working for the Anglican chaplaincy, covering central and eastern Algarve.

After serving curacy in Peterborough for nine years in an urban priority area, Rev. Bates decided it was time for a change.

He moved to Boliqueime on May 24 and his wife Diane has come to join him.

Diane Bates will be supporting her husband in his exciting new role. They are both looking forward to spending more time together, exploring the Algarve region and finding new places to walk their dogs.

The couple has a son, Tom, aged 25, who has recently graduated from university with a BA Honors in music and is also visiting his parents in Boliqueime for a short time before performing opera in a tour around Australia.

Rev. Bates is looking forward to dedicating more time to his parishioners in the Algarve and reaching out to people who would not normally attend church services.

“I want to reach out to the younger generations and encourage them to bring their families to church. In the Algarve, church is a social occasion as well as for worshipping,” he said.

Rev. Bates will no doubt experience a big contrast from working within an English parish to working in the Algarve.

“The main difference is geography – people may live up obscure dirt tracks. I have already done numerous home visits,” he said.

Rev. Bates has also performed four wedding ceremonies, which he said he has really enjoyed being a part of. He is pleased with the positive reception within the communities in which he works.

“People have been very encouraging and supportive,” he said. “The Portuguese have been welcoming and helpful. I want to learn Portuguese but I am finding it a tricky language to learn!”

The institution and licensing of Reverend Bates by the venerable David Sutch, Archdeacon of Gibraltar was held at Saint Luke’s Church in Monte da Palhagueira on July 14.

During the service, Canon Hugh Broad, Area Dean and Bishop’s Commissary, also licensed German resident Eckart Floether to be a reader.

This was followed by a summer buffet lunch at Quinta Jacintina, near Almancil, where members of the church council and the congregations from across the Algarve were able to meet the new reverend who will be working with father Haynes Hubbard.
