St. Patrick’s Day comes early to the Algarve

MEMBERS OF the Algarve’s St. Patrick’s Society celebrated their fourth annual St. Patrick’s Day earlier this month, on Saturday, March 11, at Vila Petra Hotel in Albufeira. More than 190 members and guests enjoyed a buffet dinner and spectacular mix of live music, traditional Irish dancing and disco, hosted by Kiss fm’s Mark Damon.

The Society’s favourite charity was not forgotten, with 1,500 euros being raised for Castelo de Sonhos, which provides much needed support to poor families and children in need, particularly in the Silves area, but also throughout the Algarve.

Guests of honour were Vincent Herlihy, Chargé d’Affaires at the Irish Embassy, and his wife Catherine, who travelled from Lisbon especially for the occasion. Interviewed by Kiss fm’s Owen Gee after the party, Vincent Herlihy said that, since taking up his appointment last September, he had been impressed by the high regard in which local political and business leaders held the Irish community in the Algarve. This was also demonstrated by the support received from sponsors for the night, including Barclays, Southwest Charters, Rio Arade Accommodation, Kiss fm and many other local organisations. Their continued generosity in donating raffle prizes has always been a major factor in the Society’s fundraising success.

The St. Patrick’s Society has an exciting programme of events planned for the rest of the year. If you would like more information, or wish to join the society, call the Secretary, Jenny Gannon, on 282 359 633.
