St George’s Day trophy

More than 40 bowlers from across the Algarve and western Spain came together to take part in a St George’s Day bowling competition on April 23 at the Valverde Bowls Club.

The event, organised by Bowls Portugal, saw many of the participants dressing in the red and white of the English flag with one member even wearing a white bowler hat to demonstrate his patriotism.

Gui Gomes devised new, fun bowling games for the event, including swapping leaders into the position of skip and bowling with the wrong hand.

Winners on the day were Tony and Evelyn Gilbert of Vilamoura and Keith Henley of Valverde, who were presented with the St George’s Day Trophy donated by Terry and Irene Kerr.

Money raised during the event was split between Bowls Portugal and the Valverde Bowls Club.

Membership to Bowls Portugal costs €5 per person per year.
