St George’s celebrations in Tavira

Members of the Algarve History Association celebrated St George’s Day on April 23 with a celebratory dinner at the Monte Velho restaurant in Umbria, near Tavira.

More than 40 people took part in the dinner which included dishes of wild boar stew and lamb with kiwi and papaya while a Shakespeare quiz was thrown in for entertainment.

William Shakespeare was not only born on April 23, but also died on the same date making him the perfect subject for a quiz on St George’s Day.

Peter Kingdon Booker gave a short history of St George during the lunch including details of the cult of St George in England which predates the Norman conquest and the proclamation by D João of Portugal in 1385 making St George the patron saint of Portugal also.
