Spring has sprung!

This Easter Sunday, April 4, will see the streets of São Brás de Alportel awash with colour as the annual flower torch parade takes place in celebration of the resurrection of Christ.

More than a kilometre of the streets will be covered in flowers creating a carpet of natural colour thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers who work through the night to lay the impressive display which begins at 9.30am. At 11am, there will be a procession of flower torches leaving from the church and passing through the town, while at 3.30pm there will be traditional food and drink available for spectators in the churchyard accompanied by live music.

For further information about the festival please visit (only available in Portuguese).

Meanwhile, there will be an opportunity to view floral displays created by various organisations and businesses from across the Algarve at the Flower Festival held between April 22 and 24 at the Saint Luke’s Church at Monte da Palhagueira in Gorjões near Santa Bárbara de Nêxe.

Floral displays will include examples from the Royal British Legion, the Hotel Garbe and the Ladies Luncheon Club as well as many others. Afternoon tea complete with homemade cakes and scones with jam and cream will be available from the village hall next to the church throughout the event.

Entry to the Flower Festival costS five euros with all funds being split between the St Vincent’s Chaplaincy and its associated charities which include the sponsorship of training for two nurses at Faro University.
