A group of foreign residents in Messines is looking to raise €4,500 to help the local Casa do Povo, where it is based.
The Foreign Welcome Group, led by fundraising organiser Peter Jones, wishes to help the social institution in these difficult times and support its initiative to provide food hampers to more than 60 families in Messines.
Also, more than 250 children use the centre every week and the equipment has become degraded by use.
Peter Jones told the Algarve Resident: “Because of the acute needs at present there are no funds to replace this equipment. The money we raise this year is to replace it.”
The group’s next fundraising event will be a Spring Dance, a 60s and 70s music night with live music from the Yesterdays and DJ Tiggy on March 9.
Peter said: “We are looking for help from local shops or restaurants who would act as agents to sell the tickets and display the posters. We have a large venue so numbers are not limited and we want as many people as possible.”
Other activities organised by the Foreign Welcome Group include Portuguese lessons, cultural events and excursions.
Tickets cost €5 if purchased in advance and can be booked at the Casa do Povo, by telephone 963 939 526 or email [email protected].
