EXCITEMENT IS building among Lagos residents in the run up to the inauguration of the town’s new sports complex Complexo Desportivo de Lagos – Pavilhão Municipal, due to take place on Saturday, April 21. Hundreds of people have already subscribed to use the new facility, which is situated on the west side of the town centre, close to the municipal stadium.

Work on the complex began last summer and has progressed quickly under the guidance of construction company, Lagos em Forma. The sports complex will be open to the public on May 2, shortly after the week long inauguration programme.

The ceremony on April 21 will be attended by several local and national personalities. Local swimmers will be racing for the public while Portuguese comedian Herman José will be on hand to entertain. The day will kick start a week of initiatives, including free demonstrations, guided tours and performances. The sports pavilion is being opened in two phases. Phase one opens on May 2 when the public will have access to the two new swimming pools. The main pool measures 25 by 18 metres with a sister pool measuring 18 by nine metres. On September 3, the second phase will unveil a new gymnasium with extensive body building facilities and numerous exercise studios. In addition, the complex has incorporated professional press and VIP facilities in the hope of securing national and international meetings.

A representative from Lagos Câmara has revealed that the complex will offer swimming, aqua-aerobics, aqua-jogging and hydrotherapy, among other activities. Other facilities include a massage and physiotherapy area, a solarium and a café and bar area.

Discounts

Lagos Câmara hopes that local schools and businesses will use the facilities extensively and have put together special packages for them. It is unlikely this will restrict recreational and individual use, as the swimming complex has the capacity to serve more than 1,400 people per day.

From May 2 until September 3, there will be a 50 per cent discount to all users. To access the pool, it will cost the user 2.50 euros with a card or three euros without. One, two or three week passes can be purchased as well as 10 session packages. Children under five can use all the facilities free of charge.

Those who subscribe for a card to use the complex will receive discounted entry to facilities and classes throughout the year. It is possible to subscribe for one of these discount cards until April 18 by completing a subscription form, which is available online at the Lagos Câmara website www.lagos-cm.pt The subscription costs 8.26 euros and potential users must present photo identification and a declaration from a doctor valid for the year ahead.

Initially, the complex will be open from 8am until 10pm daily although the hours may extend further once fully operational.
