Sports complex project in Portimão at risk

Construction of a new €150 million sports complex in Portimão looks likely to be cancelled.

Pedro Carvalho, marketing director of Grupo Lena, the company that won the tender to design and build the structure, said: “At the moment, there are issues to be solved between us and Portimão Câmara in order to find the best possible solution for both parties.”

The project included the construction of a stadium, a multipurpose sports complex, a pool complex and an outdoor activity area. It also included the construction of 200 habitation units and a shopping centre with supermarket, 70 shops, restaurants and cinemas.

Portimão Câmara has said that the project is no longer justified.  The council is now considering revamping the existing sports pavilion and says the Portimão Arena also has the capacity to hold major sporting events.

As far as the pool complex is concerned, Portimão Câmara intends to proceed with the construction of an infrastructure near Estádio Dois Irmãos at Bemposta.
