Sporting are Europe’s new futsal champions

Sporting have become the second Portuguese club to win the UEFA Futsal Champions League, Europe’s most important futsal competition.

The ‘Lions’ beat Kairat from Azerbaijan 2-1 in the final, played in the Kazakhstani capital of Almaty, after taking the lead with a goal by Cavinato at the 22nd minute before Alex Merlim extended their advantage five minutes later.

The best that Kairat were able to do was reduce the score difference to one goal with a strike from Douglas.

It was the first time that Sporting won the competition after making it to the final four times before. The team were welcomed in Lisbon by thousands of proud fans on Monday with mayor Fernando Medina receiving the players at the town hall for a special ceremony.

The only other Portuguese team that have won the competition was Benfica in 2010, when the ‘Eagles’ beat Spanish side Inter Movistar.
