“Sponsored Slim” raises €1,600 for special needs school

More than €1,600 raised by Kiss Fm’s ‘Captain Peter’ Cain for his sponsored slim, in which he lost 15 kilos in 10 weeks, has been presented to NECI, a school for special needs people in Praia da Luz.

Captain Peter handed the cheque to João Vieira Gonçalves da Silva, president of NECI at Portofino’s restaurant, Marina de Lagos.

The final total came to €1,640 of which one third of the money was collected at the celebration of Ayli Tait’s “Life Party” held at Portofino’s, where 150 friends and family turned up to remember Captain Peter’s late partner, Ayli Tait, who lost her eight-week battle with cancer recently.

Paul Wormall, owner of Portofino’s, provided canapés, pizza and wine free of charge, while Ayli’s favourite Algarve entertainer Rikki Ryan, the Elvis Presley tribute act, provided the entertainment and was even joined by his friend, international singing star Bonnie Tyler for a duet of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”.

Ayli was diagnosed with an aggressive form of colon cancer shortly after Peter began his slim for charity. She died one week after the official, final ‘weigh in’, at the Kiss Fm studios in Albufeira.

Peter dedicated the money in memory of Ayli, for she continually provided support and encouragement with his diet, even though she was terminally ill.

Peter, a published writer himself under the pen-name P.D. Cain, is presently writing a book ‘Till the End of Time’, which began as a diary to document his diet, but quickly turned into a diary of a very different kind.

Art for NECI
Meanwhile, NECI, the school for physically and mentally disabled children situated at Montinhos da Luz, is holding an art exhibition at the Armazém Regimental de Lagos (near the old slave market building) until October 15 (3pm to 10pm daily), displaying and selling artwork made by NECI students and other guest artists.
