Spirits lifted in Bulgaria

When the going gets tough the tough drink brandy. Well, at least in Bulgaria they do.

The Bulgarian government has announced that in a bid to literally boost the spirits of the people in Bulgaria that they will be cutting the cost of the nation’s favourite tipple, brandy.

Plans are now in place to register grape rakia, potent fruit liquor resembling brandy and the national drink of Bulgaria, as a traditional product within the EU.

This would see the excise duty on the product being cut.

Agricultural minister Miroslav Naidenov told a national radio station: “We know this won’t happen easily.  It will probably be a procedure that will take months, perhaps a year, but if this happens, excise duties on rakia will be cut in half.”

Naidenov, himself a fan of the brandy, quipped “In rakia veritas”.
