“Specialists” warn Portugal “not prepared for major intensity earthquakes”

In the context of the devastating earthquake that has killed over 2,000 people, injured many more and destroyed countless buildings in Morocco, experts have once again had a platform to predict the worst should such a scenario play out in Portugal. SIC Notícias has given air time to specialists in seismic engineering who insist the country is not prepared to deal with an “earthquake of great intensity”, and for this reason people should make themselves aware of how to proceed in such eventualities. It is not a question of ‘if’ Portugal will be hit by a large earthquake, but ‘when’, these experts explain; one remarking to SIC: “We would just need a quake in Vale do Tejo of 6 or 6.5 on the Richter Scale to have large problems”.
