Porto’s Bolhão Market has been considered by the government as a ‘Monument of Public Interest’ highlighting the space as one of the most emblematic in the city. The application for the status was submitted in 1999.
The decree ruling the decision has been published in the government’s official gazette Diário da República and describes the architectural value of the building – “following the Beaux Arts eclectic style” – as the reason for granting the space “special protection zone” status.
The market will be celebrating its 100th anniversary next year.
