Spanish ace

Eighteen-year-old Spanish tennis starlet Sandra Soler-Sola received the winner’s cheque at the 6th Portimãoo Tivoli Ladies Open after beating Russian top seed Nina Bratchikova 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the final.

Blessed by constant sunshine, the 10,000 dollar ITF event also produced three Portuguese last 16 participants for the first time ever, two of whom then paired up to upset the doubles pecking order- 2008 national junior champion Maria Joao Koehler combined brilliantly with Catarina Ferreira to upset favourites Darina Sedenkova and Lucie Kriegsmannova before bowing out 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 (Champions tie-break) to eventual winners Liudmila Nikoyan and Diana Iseva in a tense semi-final.
