Spain takes Tejo’s water (again): eco-movement slams situation “unacceptable”

Spain has been accused of retaining so much water from the Tejo river than a 30km stretch between the boroughs of Mação and Abrantes has almost run dry. The Movimento Pro-Tejo says there is no justification for this level of water appropriation. Spokesperson Paulo Constantino tells reporters: “The situation is unacceptable after such a wet winter has filled dams to levels of over 80%”. The lack of water is threatening the reproduction of sensitive species like lamprey and shad which are in the process of spawning. Movimento Pro-Tejo has denounced the situation to the environment ministry, hoping this will succeed in getting more water released. Water issues with Spain over the Tejo are constant (click here).
