The artwork of the 20 finalists of the 4th Sovereign Art Foundation Student Prize Portugal are on display at the Lady in Red Galeria de Arte in Lagoa until the end of November, after which the winners of this yearly prize will be announced on the Foundation’s website and on social media.
Organised by Sovereign Consultoria Lda on behalf of the Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), the competition aims to promote art in schools to inspire and reward young artists in the community and to encourage cultural development whilst raising funds for charity.
All students from years 10, 11 and 12 from Secondary schools in the Algarve and Alto Alentejo were invited to participate.
The Sovereign Art Foundation is a non-profit organisation and registered charity, established in 2003, initially in Asia, to recognise the growing wealth of contemporary art talent and bring the proven benefits of expressive arts to underprivileged children. It has so far raised more than US$ 9 million for artists and charities worldwide.
The Sovereign Art Prizes raise funds by auctioning artworks from the competitions held in Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe, with the proceeds being shared equally between the artists and the Foundation who then uses the funds for their charity work with disadvantaged children in using art as a means of education, rehabilitation and therapy.
Since 2012, SAF Student Prizes have been run to celebrate the importance of art in the education system and to recognise the quality of art produced by young students. The first and second prizes are selected by judges. There is also the public vote prize awarded to the artwork which receives the most votes from the public, both online and directly during the exhibitions, so please vote for your favourite! Prizes totaling €3,100 will be awarded to the artists and their schools.
The artworks are available for sale by silent auction with the proceeds being divided between the artists and the charity project chosen by Sovereign for this prize, which will be NECI – Núcleo Especializado para o Cidadão Incluso, located in Praia da Luz. NECI is an institution that has many different types of art workshops for their resident and non-resident teenagers and young adults with disabilities. The art produced in the workshops is sold to raise funds for NECI themselves and Sovereign is delighted to be able to support this good cause.
Sovereign are proud to be able to give something back to the community through the Student Prize Portugal 2020 and would like to thank all sponsors, the teachers of the participating schools and all those who assisted with our exhibitions. The biggest thanks must go to the students, not only the 20 finalists but all the participants.
