Galeria de Arte Pintor Samora Barros in Albufeira will host the first exhibition of the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize 2019 on Saturday, February 2, showing the amazing art of the 21 finalists.
The main purpose of the prize is to inspire, encourage and reward young artists in the community, to encourage cultural development and raise funds for children in the region. All students from years 10, 11 and 12 were invited to participate.
The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), a non-profit organisation and registered charity, was established in 2003, initially in Asia, to recognise the growing wealth of contemporary art talent and bring the proven benefits of expressive arts to underprivileged children. Since 2012, SAF Students Prizes have been run to celebrate the importance of art in the education system and recognise the quality of art produced by young students.
The foundation has so far raised more than US$ 6 million for artists and charities worldwide.
Following four exhibitions across the Algarve, the winners of the Algarve Prize will be announced at a final event on May 11, 2019 at the Lady in Red Gallery in Lagoa.
The first and second prizes are selected by the judges. There is also the Public Vote prize awarded to the artwork which receives the most votes from the public, both online and directly during the exhibitions. Prizes totaling €3,100 will be awarded to the artists and their schools.
Following the prize awards, all the artworks will be auctioned to the public with the proceeds being divided between the artists and the chosen charity project, School Art Projects Workshops organised by artists David Trubshaw and Gudrun Bartels, on behalf of the Rotary Clube de Silves.
The exhibition runs until February 26 and can be visited from 9.30am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
