Sovereign Art student talent goes on show this Saturday

Galeria de Arte Pintor Samora Barros in Albufeira is hosting the first exhibition of the Sovereign Art Foundation Students Prize Portugal 2020 on Saturday, February 1, showing the amazing art of the 20 finalists.

The main purpose of the prize is to inspire, encourage and reward young artists in the community, to encourage cultural development and raise funds for charity in the region. All students from secondary schools in the Algarve and Alto Alentejo were invited to participate.

The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF), a non-profit organisation and registered charity, was established in 2003, initially in Asia, to recognise the growing wealth of contemporary art talent and bring the proven benefits of expressive arts to underprivileged children. Since 2012, SAF Students Prizes have been run to celebrate the importance of art in the education system and recognise the quality of art produced by young students.

The Foundation has so far raised more than US$9 million for artists and charities worldwide.

Following four exhibitions across the Algarve, the winners of the Algarve Prize will be announced at a final event on July 11 at the Lady in Red Gallery in Lagoa.

The first and second prizes are selected by the judges. There is also the Public Vote prize awarded to the artwork which receives the most votes from the public, both online and directly during the exhibitions – “so please vote for your favourite!” say organisers. Prizes totaling €3,100 will be awarded to the artists and their schools.

This amazing artwork is for sale by silent auction and bids should be sent to Isobel Costa on [email protected] You will be informed if you are outbid in order to bid again!

Proceeds from the sale will be divided between the students themselves and the charity project chosen by Sovereign for this prize, which is NECI, an institution that runs various art workshops for its residential and day care disabled teenagers and adults in Praia da Luz.

The exhibition runs until February 26 and can be visited from 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday.
