South African variant in Portugal: “We’re only seeing tip of iceberg”

Today’s meeting of experts at Infarmed has referred to 53 cases of the South African variant already confirmed in Portugal, and the fact that these are “only the tip of the iceberg”. INSA expert João Paulo Gomes stresses the importance of vigilance at the borders “not just ours but others too because this variant is worrying”. It is believed to have arrived in the country via Mozambique and Spain. It currently accounts for 2.5% of cases, whereas the British variant accounts for more than 83% of cases nationally, and that percentage is up to 94 in the Algarve.
