Residents in the Algarve produce more waste per person than in any other part of Portugal.
According to the Sociedade Ponto Verde, the company that manages the collection system and treatment of packaging waste in the country, people in the region produce, on average, 843 kilos of garbage each per year.
The region’s 421,528 inhabitants produced a total of 355,352 tonnes of garbage in 2008.
According to Algar, the company that manages the municipal waste in the Algarve, this figure is due to tourism activity, particularly from hotels and restaurants.
