An investigation has been launched into the horrific death of a soldier at an army barracks in Póvoa de Varzim on Thursday.
Father-of-two Filipe Viana, 25, was helping a sergeant load wood onto a dumper truck when he was crushed by the truck against a wall.
The desperately-injured soldier was attended at the scene by a nurse who realised the extent of his injuries and called for transport to the local hospital. According to reports, Viana was still conscious when he reached hospital.
As the young man’s family and colleagues come to terms with the tragedy, a spokesman for the army has said all the circumstances will now have to be minutely investigated.
Viana’s family are understood to be receiving psychological support. The soldier leaves behind two sons, one aged five and the other a newborn.
