A revision of the legislation governing the operation of solariums in Portugal is urgent, said the President of the Portuguese Dermatology and Venereology Society. Américo Figueiredo said access to solariums should be prohibited to those under 18 years of age. A study published by the British Medical Journal has revealed that users of solariums have 20% more chances of developing melanoma, the most aggressive form of skin cancer. The risk doubles if the tanning beds are used by those under 35 years of age.
