PORTUGUESE PRIME Minister, José Sócrates, was heckled last week when he visited a school in Figueira da Foz, in central Portugal.
The PM visited the Bernardino Machado Secondary School, accompanied by Education Minister, Maria de Lurdes Rodrigues, to mark the academic year’s first week of classes. Members of the teachers’ union shouted “liar” and “fascist” at Sócrates as he and Rodrigues arrived at the school entrance.
“I think it’s perfectly acceptable for people to demonstrate but not to hurl insults. It does not set a good example to the pupils,” said Sócrates afterwards. Teachers claimed that they wanted to hand over a protest letter to the Prime Minister but were unable to do so.
