PRIME MINISTER José Sócrates unveiled the National Action Plan against Discrimination on February 23.
The initiative forms part of the European Year for Equal Opportunities for All initiative within the EU.
The government plans to set up Equality in Diversity posts at câmaras throughout the country with staff aiming to make people conscious of a fairer and more supportive society.
Sócrates said the main objective was the promotion of equality and offering everyone the same opportunities.
One of the activities that will be developed is the setting up of assemblies for equality in diversity for a fairer society at municipal level.
The themes and topics forecast for these assemblies will include debates from all national and local political forces and non-governmental groups and associations adopting measures in favour of equal rights promotion.
According to the government, the initiative will be launched in March and is to be co-ordinated by regional governments in the Azores, Madeira and throughout the 18 civil municipal districts in Portugal.
