Social support

More than 13,000 people in the Algarve received a social subsidy, while a further 10,000 claimed unemployment benefit at the end of the third quarter last year.

The figures released by the Algarve Co-ordination and Development Commission (CCDR) point to an increase in the number of people needing social support in the region.

The study by the CCDR also revealed that the majority of unemployed registered at job centres came from the construction sector, representing more than 5,000, an increase of 28% in comparison to 2009.

Also, 53% of those on unemployment benefit had been without a job for a year or more.
