Eleven estates included in “Morar Melhor” (Live Better) programme
A plan to restore and upgrade social housing on 11 estates in the municipality of Lisbon – with a total investment of €40 million through to 2026 – is to start tomorrow in the Bairro dos Alfinetes, Marvila parish, municipal property company Gebalis has announced today.
The planned works are part of the “Morar Melhor” (Live Better) programme, in which Gebalis (full name Gestão do Arrendamento da Habitação Municipal de Lisboa) aims to intervene in “11 neighbourhoods, 129 buildings and more than 2,000 units”.
The company explains that the programme is all about providing a better quality of life in buildings that are generally around 30 years old. In many cases this implies “structural works on roofs, façades and common areas that have not undergone any interventions for decades.”
The planned interventions also aim to “modernise and recover inoperative lifts, which make the daily lives of many people, especially the elderly, particularly difficult.”
Of the 11 neighbourhoods in question – 2 de Maio, Açucenas, Alfinetes, Boavista, Bom Pastor, Condado, Flamenga, Nascimento Costa, Padre Cruz, Rego and Telheiras Sul – seven are included in the Special Rehousing Programme (PER) underway since 1993, and designed to eradicate shanty-type housing in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto.
The Morar Melhor programme is to continue during the next weeks in Bairro Padre Cruz, in Carnide parish, and Bairro da Boavista, in Benfica parish.
