Soalheiro Alvarinho 2012 – Docile, and incredibly versatile

From one of the top Alvarinho producers in the Minho comes this unusual and surprisingly versatile wine. This is an ideal sweet wine for people who do not really like sweet wine, a good partner for foie gras and especially for light fruity desserts, and it is also a very pleasant aperitif.
With its low alcohol content, good acidity and subtle sweetness, it offers a completely different take of the Alvarinho grape. This is not a late harvest but is produced by halting the fermentation of the must when the alcohol reaches 9%, leaving a touch of residual sugar but delivering the great freshness that is typical of this most noble of Portuguese white grapes.
What’s more, it is not expensive, with a retail price of around €12 for the 75ml bottle (also available in 50ml).
Dócil sadly is rather hard to get hold of in shops. Many of the Algarve’s best restaurants stock it, however, along with some specialist wine stores like About Wine in Faro.
Orders for a box or more can also be placed directly with the distributor Decante Vinhos.
