Organisers have celebrated another successful edition of the ‘Festival do Contrabando’ (Smuggling Festival), a crossborder event which attracted thousands of visitors to Alcoutim (Portugal) and Sanlúcar de Guadiana (Spain) between March 24 and 26.
The festival is famous for its floating footbridge over the Guadiana River which links the town, providing a truly unique experience to visitors who cross it.
But there is much more to the event, from street entertainment such as musical and theatre performances harkening back to the times when contraband was key to these communities’ survival to a street market.
While the event focuses on the area’s history of smuggling, “it goes way beyond it,” according to Alcoutim Mayor Osvaldo Gonçalves.
“The programme that we offer has a huge diversity of shows, with artists of many nationalities, and activities which together with our street market creates a perfect scenario for everyone to travel back to the times of smuggling,” he said.
