Smart 112 call technology to come on line in 2023

From next year, anyone dialling 112 (Portugal’s emergency number for police/ firefighters) will find their call instantly geo-refenced, allowing authorities access to all the necessary information, particularly who made the call and from where. The new technology will cost €11.5 million – half of which will be covered by PRR (EU ‘bazooka’) funding, the rest by the next five years’ worth of State Budgets. As reports explain, the technology will be useful in cases where people calling  for help do not actually know where they are (for whatever reason…) Portugal currently has 63 call centres for 112 calls, with the average time taken to answer them being just six seconds.
