Small change in cataract surgery would save 13 tons of plastic – project

CHEDV, the Entre Douro e Vouga Hospital Centre (CHEDV) has reduced consumables used in cataract surgery to a minimum, thanks to a protocol that, if replicated in hospitals of the national public network, would save 13 tons of plastic annually. This is the conclusion of coordinators of the experiment conducted throughout 2021 in the hospitals of Santa Maria da Feira and São João da Madeira, both in the district of Aveiro, and distinguished this month in Dubai as “one of the eight best projects worldwide among about 400 candidates” vying for the International Hospital Federation awards.
