Slaughterhouse is needed

FARMERS IN Lagos, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur have sent a letter to the Ministry of Agriculture asking for a new public slaughterhouse.

The letter was sent by the Associação de Municípios Terras do Infante, a local council association, which claims that small cattle were seriously affected by the ASAE, the food and business inspections authority, when it closed the only slaughterhouse that existed in the eastern region.

Farmers claim that the cattle has to be sent to Beja, in Alentejo, or Setúbal, near Lisbon, which affects the quality of the meat, due to the stress the animals are submitted to in the transportation stage, and the costs for the farmers.
