SKIING

DESPITE A day blacked out by striking Italian television workers, Bode Miller has confirmed that he is the greatest skier of his generation by taking gold in both the downhill and the Super G at the World Championships in Bormio. The 27-year-old American failed to become the first man in forty years to win three gold medals at a single World Championships, however, when he lost his giant slalom crown to the incredible Hermann Maier. The Austrian nearly lost his leg in a motorcycle accident four years ago before coming back to capture his fourth overall World Cup title in 2004 and the giant slalom gold last week.

Croatian ski queen, Janica Kostelic, did go one better in the women’s championships in Santa Caterina, taking her third gold in the slalom ahead of Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen.
