PORTIMÃO’S LEGENDARY annual sardine festival was a major hit again this year, with organisers reporting that a massive six tons of sardines were consumed over the 10-day event.
Organised by Portimão Câmara and Empresa Municipal Expoarade, the event took place at the beginning of August at Portimão’s fairs and exhibitions park.
Around 55,000 people visited the festival, but, despite being an impressive number, it fell below the expectations of organisers, who had hoped for around 62,500 visitors. The fall in numbers has been explained by the country’s current economic crisis.
As well as the delicious grilled sardines, visitors were also treated to a varied entertainment programme and there was even a sardine eating competition! The winner was António Maia, who beat last year’s record by eating 49 sardines in 15 minutes.
